Everything about Nesset totally explained
Nesset is a
municipality in the
county of
Møre og Romsdal,
Norway on the
Romsdal Peninsula.
Nesset was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt).
Eresfjord og Vistdal was separated from Nesset January 1, 1890 - but again merged with Nesset January 1, 1964.
The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm (and vicarage) Nesset ("Nødesetter" 1520). The first element is probably
nes n 'headland' (since the farm is lying on a prominent headland), the last element is
setr/sætr n 'farm'.
Until 1889 the name was written
Næsset.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1986. The broken line symbolizes the appearance of
Mardalsfossen.
What to see
Mardalsfossen, one of Norway's tallest waterfalls, a popular tourist attraction during the tourist season, is located there.
Birdlife
From the shores of the fjord, to the towering mountains at 1800 m.a.s., the rural community of Nesset offers the visiting birder a range of habitats, and several interesting areas. One area worth checking is Eidsvågleirene. Though the selection of species won't be high, several of the commoner species can be found.
Grey Heron is a characteristic species in the area along with
Mallard.
